Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month
For the month of January, Devyn Keith posted eye-popping numbers in a pair of prestigious events. On January 16th in the Carl Lewis Indoor Classic, the senior posted a time of 1:57.3 in the 800 meters. A week later (January 23rd), he recorded a meet record with a time of 4:16.98 in the 1,600 meters at the LSU High School Qualifier. Both are the fastest times in the state thus far this year. In addition to his indoor track excellence in January, Keith was named the Louisiana Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year for the second consecutive year on January 21 after winning his third straight cross country state championship (Class 3A as a sophomore and junior and Class 5A this year). Not only does he excel in the athletic arena, but he is an honor student and a member of the student council, spirit club and poetry club, as well as a columnist for the student newspaper.
Keith earned the honor over five outstanding basketball players. Lamar Peters had a 40-point outburst and a 32-point outing during games for the Landry-Walker boys' basketball team; Harrison Prieto, from St. Paul's School, averaged 15.4 points and 9.1 rebounds in leading the Wolves to a perfect 8-0 month of January; Elise Reilly averaged 22.3 points per game while leading her Mandeville squad to seven straight wins; seven-footer Mitchell Robinson from Chalmette High averaged 21.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 8.9 blocks; and Destrehan girls' star Cara Ursin averaged 23.3 points per game in a 9-1 month for the Wildcats.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
