Friday, January 29, 2016

Aldon Clark, the standout quarterback for Edna Karr High School, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for December. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month

Clark played in two high-profile December games - the Class 4A state semifinals vs. Franklinton and the state championship game against Neville). He threw for a total of 810 yards with seven touchdowns and only one interception against two top-notch opponents. In the 34-21 semifinal win over Franklinton, he tallied 443 yards and four TDs and then registered 367 yards and three scores vs. top-seeded Neville in a 45-26 championship game loss. For the 2015 season he completed 65-percent of his tosses for 3,861 yards, 38 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He not only excels on the gridiron but holds a 3.07 GPA in the classroom.

Clark earned the honor over a strong field. The runner-up was Rico Gathers, a 6-8, 275-pound senior forward from Laplace and Riverside Academy, who has been a dominant inside force for Baylor. During a 6-1 month for the Bears, Gathers averaged 14.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. In a 75-62 win over Northwestern State, Gathers registered 31 points and 21 rebounds - just the second 30/20 game in Baylor history (and the first in nearly 50 years).

Also nominated for December recognition were Country Day basketball standout Michael Corchiani, who was the MVP of the Newman Basketball Tournament; Malik Crowfield from Riverside basketball, who collected MVP honors at the Country Day Tournament; LSU star Leonard Fournette, who ran for 212 yards and scored five touchdowns in the Tigers' bowl victory over Texas Tech; Loyola University basketball standout Jalen gray, who averaged 14.5 points for the Wolf Pack in December; and St. Paul's soccer star Collin Gray, who scored seven goals in leading the Wolves to an undefeated month.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
