NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 22) - Two summer baseball standouts have been honored as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month of July and August, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced this week. Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month
Winter, a Brother Martin standout, was sizzling in July for eventual state champion Peake BMW. The right-hander was a perfect 5-0 with two victories in the state championship, including a win over East Ascension in the state championship game. He tosses 12 innings throughout the state tourney and recorded 22 strikeouts during the month.
LeBlanc was the Most Valuable Player of the All-American Amateur Baseball Association national tournament in Jonestown, Pa., as the New Orleans Boosters claimed their first national title in nine years, but their 13th overall. In seven games in the AAABA Tournament, LeBlanc batted .371 with 13 hits, including three doubles, three triples and a home run. He also scored 14 runs, drove in eight and was 9-for-9 on stolen bases. New Orleans lost its opening game in the tournament before winning six consecutive games to capture the title. A native of Lockport who prepped at Central Lafourche, LeBlanc was Delgado Community College's second-leading hitter as a freshman last spring, with a .356 average and a team-high 56 runs batted in.
Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, on Friday, July 23.
