Brother Martin and Newman to Meet in Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Finals

Brother Martin and Neman will meet in the Championship of the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. The home-standing Crusaders defeated Jesuit, 61-50, in the first semifinal on Friday evening at Brother Martin, while the Greenies rolled to a 70-27 win over Holy Cross. This year marks the 59th year of the tournament and the fifth year that it has been sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

In the opening game of the evening, both teams battled hard before Brother Martin pulled away in the fourth quarter behind the efforts of Patrick McCree, who scored 11 of his 16 points in the final stanza. Jesuit was led by Matt Felger's game-high 28 points.

In the Newman victory, Duke Douglas scored a game-high 18 points as the Greenies held Holy Cross to just four points in both the second and fourth quarters. Kyle Lewis added 17 points for the undefeated Greenies, who are ranked No. 1 among small schools this week by Holy Cross was led by 13 points from Jordan Brookter.

Last year, St. Augustine defeated Holy Cross, 76-52, to earn its second straight title in the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. Craig Victor, a 6-7 sophomore forward for the Purple Knights, earned Most Valuable Player honors for the second year in a row. In the 58-year history of the tournament, he is just the fifth player to earn MVP honors more than once. It is the 10th title in the event for St. Aug. Joining Victor on the All-Tournament team were Joseph Williams (East St. John), Sam Kohnke (Newman), Greg White-Pittman (Holy Cross), Wesley Pinera (Holy Cross) and Deion Taylor (St. Augustine).
