Wednesday, April 12, 2017

The Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame held its 2017 Awards Luncheon on Wednesday afternoon in the St. Charles Club Room at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The highlight of the event was the announcement of six winners of college scholarships from the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Thirty-five local high school football players were recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the football field. The honorees were chosen from a group of nominated scholar athletes from the New Orleans area. Archie Manning, the national chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, recognized each of the 35 student athletes at the event. From that group of 35, six were selected to receive Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholarships for $10,000 each. The scholarship winners were chosen based on essays submitted after being notified of their selection as scholar-athletes.

The six scholarship winners were Earnest Guidry (Fisher High School), Chase LeMaire (Fontainebleau High School), Joshua Sauviac (Jesuit High School), Jordan Scott (Thomas Jefferson High School), Jamie Sencial (Northlake Christian School) and Alex Siragusa (Chalmette High School). Stanley Cohn, the President of the Sugar Bowl Committee, recapped their accomplishments and referenced their winning essays prior to presenting each scholarship winner with a commemorative check.

Guidry was a four-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. In football, he was a key player for his team, earning all-district honors. In the classroom, he was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society while also serving on the student council and the climate leadership team. His essay stressed his appreciation of his mom, his dad and his two sisters, and his understanding of the need to be a role model for his younger cousin. He will attend LSU this fall, majoring in environmental engineering.

LeMaire excelled in many sports during his high school career. He was an all-state selection in tennis and in track and field as a javelin thrower while also earning all-district honors as a football team captain. Despite that success, in his essay, he wrote, "I recognized a long time ago that my brain would probably have to support me in life rather than my athleticism." He has proven that by achieving a 4.0 grade-point average and a 32 on the ACT while serving as President of the National Honor Society. Despite opportunities for athletic scholarships, he will be attending LSU this fall to take advantage of its mechanical engineering program.

Sauviak wrote about how much he learned about hard work, dedication and commitment from playing sports, as well as playing the guitar, his other hobby. While he downplayed his athleticism, he was a three-year football letterman and a lacrosse player. He achieved a 4.5 grade-point average; he worked at summer camps for underprivileged kids; and he made care packages for the many homeless people around the city. The son of a teacher, he will be attending Vanderbilt University this fall with plans to become a doctor.

In Scott's essay, he described the many challenges he's faced and shared that finances have been tight for his family as his mother raised four children, mostly on her own. Nonetheless, he wrote that "I am someone who does not give in to adversity, someone who always reaches for new heights." Those heights include being a four-year letterman and a three-time all-district selection in football; letters in wrestling and track; the National Honor Society and academic all-state in the classroom; and a very impressive 33 on the ACT. He will be attending Wabash College in Indiana in the fall.

Sencial used his essay to highlight a key life lesson taught to him by his father. That lesson was to "never take anything for granted." Despite being one of the smaller freshman at his school with little knowledge of football, he worked hard in practice and in the weight room and overcame injuries to become an all-district selection while tallying over 100 tackles as a senior linebacker. He also remained focused in the classroom, qualifying for the honor roll in all four years of high school while serving on the National Honor Society. He will study engineering at Louisiana Tech this fall.

Siragusa was a three-year letterman and a team captain for his football team. He has faced challenges and obstacles in his life, including seeing the family home lost to Katrina and battling a pair of injuries that required surgery. Crediting football for teaching him to be resilient, he never let those issues hold him back in the classroom. He studied rigorously for every test in order to put himself in the best position to become the first member of his family to earn a four-year college degree. He will attend the University of New Orleans this fall.

In addition to the high school honorees, two local men were recognized for their contributions to the community and the sport of football.

Marty Mulé, an esteemed Louisiana journalist for over 30 years prior to his passing in March of last year, was posthumously presented with the Contributions to Amateur Football Award. His grandson Joseph Strohmeyer accepted the honor. Mulé was named Louisiana Sports Writer of the Year 14 times while also writing eight books - all of which related to amateur football. He was also presented the Distinguished Service in Journalism Award, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame's highest honor for journalists. Two of his books were histories of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, an organization for which he was known as its unofficial historian. A native of New Orleans' Irish Channel, Mulé graduated from Redemptorist High School and LSU, where he earned a degree in journalism.

Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Marshall Faulk was presented with the Distinguished American Award. His sensational NFL career, which followed a record-breaking college career at San Diego State, included a Super Bowl Championship, a league MVP honor and seven Pro Bowl selections. He first became a national name during a record-breaking college football career at San Diego State. Before being a national star, Faulk was an outstanding football player at George Washington Carver High School; and he has never forgotten his roots. Always a strong supporter of the city of New Orleans, he continues to be an integral part of the efforts to bring a state-of-the-art football stadium to Carver High, located in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans.

The New Orleans Chapter of the National Football Foundation was established in 1971. The Sugar Bowl took over sponsorship of the chapter in 2000.
