Semifinal Match-Ups Set for Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tourney park
St. Augustine, Newman, Holy Cross and East St. John have advanced to the semifinals of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament to be played on Friday evening at Holy Cross High School. This year marks the 58th year of the tournament.
Defending champion St. Aug rolled to a 69-45 victory over Brother Martin as Ronald Daniels scored 19 points with seven rebounds. Craig Victor tallied 14 points while Deion Taylor added 11. The Crusaders were led by Denzel Flemings, who had 13 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Cornish chipped in with 12 points.
Holy Cross advanced in a tight 55-51 battle with East St. John as Tiger coach Juan Lumas earned his 100th career victory as he watched his team connect on 19-of-24 free throws. The Wildcats were led by Joseph Williams' 17 points. Despite the loss, East St. John also advances to the semifinals as the wild card based on point differential. It will meet St. Aug in the early (6 p.m.) game on Friday.
Holy Cross will host Newman in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The Greenies saw Sam Kohnke drill four three-pointers en route to a 21-point performance in their 63-39 victory over Rummel. Duke Douglas added 18 points and nine rebounds for Newman while the Raiders were led by Stephen Dunbar and Zach Schmidt, who each scored eight.
