Sam Houston State Earns Title at Allstate Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic park

Sam Houston State won all three of its matches to win the championship of the 15th Allstate Sugar Bowl Women's Volleyball Collegiate Classic, hosted by Tulane University, on September 2-3, 2016, at Tulane's Devlin Fieldhouse. UT Rio Grande Valley earned second place, followed by Bethune-Cookman and Tulane.

The Bearkats wrapped up the title with their Saturday evening victory over the host Green Wave. They were led by Tournament MVP Jordyn Vaughn who recorded 21 kills, the second most by a Sam Houston player on the season, alongside 12 digs. The win was the fourth straight for the Kats who defeated Bethune-Cookman and UT Rio Grande Valley as well in New Orleans.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic was the first collegiate event of the organization's year-long repertoire of events, which will be highlighted by the 83rd annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic on Monday, January 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Sugar Bowl Committee continues to be very active in the New Orleans community by holding fast to its mission of sponsoring and promoting amateur sporting events which foster revenue and spark economic growth for the city and the state. This year the Bowl will support more than 50 events in sports such as volleyball, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, track and field, soccer and tennis. In addition, the Allstate Sugar Bowl sponsors the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame as well as the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.
