Quarterback Named Sugar Bowl Amateur Athlete of the Month park
NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 9, 2009) – Lutcher High School quarterback Gavin Webster has been selected as the Allstate Sugar Bowl Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Week for the month of September, the Sugar Bowl announced on Friday.
Webster led the Bulldogs to four victories during the month, including upsets of Class 5A schools (Lutcher is 4A). The junior opened the month rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns and completing 17-of-25 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in a 33-14 win over Dutchtown. In his next outing, Webster threw for 256 yards and three scores as Lutcher cruised to a 28-0 victory over Scotlandville. On Sept. 18, Webster may have had his top performance in a thrilling 43-34 double-overtime triumph over a highly-touted Hahnville squad. The quarterback had 31 carries for 299 yards and five touchdowns while also completing 7-of-11 passes for 72 yards and two more touchdowns. He closed the month with 276 passing yards and five touchdowns in a 69-37 win over Warren Easton.
Webster was not without top-notch competition for the September award. Also nominated were Tulane wide receiver Jeremy Williams (417 receiving yards with two TDs in three games), Pearl River running back James Gillum (754 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in four games), UNO volleyball standout Nicky Valenti (5.07 digs per set during an 8-3 month for the Privateers) and Brother Martin running back Dante Butler (661 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in four victories).
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
