Day One of Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament Complete

The first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament wrapped up with one team being upset on its home court. The quarterfinals will be played tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Rummel, Brother Martin, St. Augustine and Jesuit High Schools.

The upset of the evening featured St. Paul’s topping defending champion Jesuit, 42-40, on the Blue Jays’ home court. The Wolves will play Karr, a 44-34 winner over Shaw, in quarterfinal action tonight, also at Jesuit.

In quarterfinal action at St. Aug tonight, the Purple Knights will take on Slidell High School. St. Aug rolled over West Jefferson, 70-40, in Wednesday’s first round action, while the Tigers topped Holy Cross, 55-47.

The Brother Martin site will see the home-standing Crusaders battling Ellender at 7:30 tonight. Brother Martin defeated Bonnabel, 64-57, while Ellender knocked off Northshore, 82-72.

Rummel High School had the most dominant victory of the first round, cruising to a 52-29 win over St. Charles. The Raiders will face St. Thomas Aquinas, a 68-55 winner over East St. John, in tonight’s Rummel quarterfinal.

The semifinals will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Jesuit, while the Championship game will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, also at Jesuit.

Last year’s tournament featured 16 boys’ high school teams playing in 25 games. Jesuit High School held off St. Augustine, 58-50, to win the championship with the Blue Jays’ Colby Kiefer earning the event’s Most Valuable Player honor. It was Jesuit’s first CYO Title since 2005. -
