Gathers was the catalyst for Riverside's run to the Class 2A state basketball championship in March. The Rebels defeated Jonesboro Hodge, 84-61, on March 13 for the state title. In the month of March, Gathers was named the Most valuable Player in the state title game, the Top 28 Most Outstanding Player in Class 2A and the state's Class 2A Player of the Year. The 6-7, 230-pound sophomore averaged 19.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and three assists per game. In the championship game, he scored 23 points with eight rebounds and three blocks. He also tallied 22 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks in the semifinal win over Evangel. Riverside finished the year with a 35-6 record.

Zetterwall capped off a brilliant spring season for the Privateers by averaging 70.5 strokes over six rounds in April and winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship April 26-28 in Muscle Shoals, Ala. He had a career-best six-under par 66 in the second round and finished at eight-under par 208 en route to a five-shit win - his first career tournament victory and the first-ever Sun Belt medalist honor for a UNO player. He registered a second-place finish in his only other April tournament at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C. After entering the season with only one career top-10 finish, Zetterwall ended the season with five straight top 10s.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
