Pearl River's Gillum Earns Athlete of the Month Honor park
Pearl River High School tailback James Gillum has been selected as the Allstate Sugar Bowl Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Week for the month of October, the Sugar Bowl announced on Thursday.
Gillum rushed for over 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns during the month of October, including tallying 346 yards and six touchdowns in a hard-fought loss to Bogalusa. He added 244 yards and four touchdowns, including a 97-yard run, as well as an interception return touchdown, in a victory over Vidalia. In a mid-month win over Riverdale, Gillum notched another 200-yard effort with 236 yards as well as five scores. He also added 172 yards on a workmanlike 38 carries against East Jefferson. All of these impressive numbers came despite Pearl River losing its standout fullback and lead blocker to injury early in the month.
Gillum finished the 2009 campaign as the fourth-leading rusher in the state and the top ground-gainer and touchdown producer in Metro New Orleans.
Gillum edged another star running back, Hahnville's Alfred Blue, who helped the Tigers to a 5-0 month with 634 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
