Keiva Council from Loyola Women's Basketball Collects Athlete of the Month Recognition park
Star guard Keiva Council from Loyola University's women's basketball team has been named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for January. She was selected in balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Council averaged 22.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game as the Lady Wolfpack posted a 7-1 record for the month of January. She has led Loyola to a 21-2 overall mark and the No. 19 ranking in NAIA; she leads the Southern States Athletic Conference in scoring. Her top performance of the month came in a Jan. 6 win over Brewton-Parker, when the Houston product scored 41 points with nine rebounds.
Council edged UNO men's basketball standout Lovell Cook, Tulane star freshman Ricky Tarrant and Xavier Prep's Kailyn Williams for the honor. Cook averaged 15.3 points and 7.1 rebounds during the month for the Privateers; Tarrant averaged 18.4 points, including tying a Green Wave freshman record with a 33-point performance; and Williams posted a pair of triple-doubles in key victories or Xavier Prep's girls' basketball team.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
