Katie Kampen and Charles Jackson Earn Amateur Athlete Honors park
Mount Carmel volleyball star Katie Kampen and Charles Jackson, from Jesuit's football team, have been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for November and December, respectively. Both student-athletes led their schools to state championships. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Kampen produced 21 kills and was named Most Outstanding Player in leading Mount Carmel Academy to a 25-23, 25-17, 26-24 win over defending state champion St. Joseph Academy in the Division I volleyball state championship match on November 15th at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner. Kampen, who is coached by April Hagadone, went on to be named the Most Valuable Player in Louisiana. Also in November, Kampen had 19 kills as Mount Carmel whipped Acadiana 25-7, 25-10, 25-5 on November 10 in the regional round. She produced 21 kills and one ace as the Cubs defeated Dominican 25-20, 25-13, 25-22 in the quarterfinals on November 13 and she had 18 kills as Mount Carmel bounced Barbe 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 in the semifinals on November 14. For the month, Kampen finished with 79 kills and two aces.
Jackson rushed 16 times for 142 yards to lead Jesuit to a 17-14 victory over three-time defending state champion John Curtis to win the Division I state championship game on December 6 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. For his performance, Jackson was named the Most Outstanding Player for Jesuit in the game and he earned Metro New Orleans Player of the Week honors from the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club, Friday Night Football on WNOL and WGNO, WGSO Radio, SportsNOLA.com and SportsNOLA TV on WHNO. Jackson is coached by Mark Songy.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
