Kalani Brown Named Amateur Athlete of the Month for January park
Kalani Brown, a dominant senior for the Salmen High School girls' basketball team, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for January. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Brown, a 6-6 forward/center, led Salmen to a perfect 9-0 month of January, including the successful defense of the championship in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic. Brown averaged 27.3 points per game during the month, including four 30-point efforts. In earning MVP honors at the Sugar Bowl Tournament, she led the Spartans to two wins on the final day of the event, combining for 49 points and 32 rebounds in wins over Destrehan and Warren Easton. Brown, who was selected as the Greater New Orleans Female Amateur Athlete of the Year for 2013-14, will play basketball for Baylor University next year.
Brown edged two other top basketball players for the honor. Former Riverside Academy star Rico Gathers averaged 11.1 points and 14.1 rebounds in nine games for the Baylor Bears, including setting the Baylor school record with 28 rebounds (in just 28 minutes of action) in a game against NAIA opponent Huston-Tillotson. Jaiwon Charles, a standout for the Archbishop Shaw basketball team, was also nominated after scoring 29 points against a very good defensive Brother Martin squad during a 71-70 District 9-5A upset on Jan. 30.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
