July and August Amateur Athletes of the Month Announced park
Price Butcher, a star local golfer, and Brooks Vial, a standout pitcher for the New Orleans Boosters, have been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month for July and August, respectively. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Butcher, who will be a senior at Newman, turned in his second consecutive round of 4-under-par 68 to claim the 58th Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship at Carter Plantation on July 10. Butcher had a 36-hole total of 8-under-par 136 to win. It was Butcher's second junior amateur crown as he also won the 2013 title at TPC Louisiana. Butcher easily claimed the title, winning by four strokes over runner-up Logan Leary of Gonzales (71-69-140). Butcher recorded two eagles on par-5 holes the final day to key his championship. He also had one on the first day.
Vial led the 2015 New Orleans Boosters to the All-American Amateur Baseball Association national title this August in Johnstown, Pa. In his second appearance of the tournament, the lefty pitched the Boosters to a 9-1 win over Boston to earn the team a berth in the Championship game. In the game, Vial allowed only five hits, two walks, and struck out ten. All total, he closed his AAABA stint with 14 strikeouts in two appearances (16 1/3 innings in two games) with a 0.55 ERA (allowing only one run) win two wins. He was named the 2015 AAABA Tournament Most Valuable Player and also earned the prestigious Point Stadium Award for the month of August, recognizing the best game performance of the month in the City of Johnstown. Vial, a product of Hahnville High School and Delgado Community College, will pitch for Virginia Commonwealth this fall. The 2015 Boosters went 6-1 in the tournament to earn the New Orleans franchise's 14th AAABA National Title. This year marked New Orleans' 69th appearance in the tournament.
Butcher edged Mason Mayfield, from the Retif Oil Legion Baseball team, for the July honor. Mayfield pitched a five-hit shutout over the Acadiana-based Delhomme Drillers in the Louisiana State Legion Championship at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium on July 22.
The August voting included five impressive nominees. Finishing second to Vial was Cera Blanchard, an eighth-grader at Dominican who led her Jefferson Parish Recreation Department softball team to the 2015 Babe Ruth Softball World Series 12 & Under national title in Alachua, Fla. Also nominated were John Curtis baseball standout Daniel Cabrera, 12-year old boxer Alexis Lavarine and UNO pitcher Daniel Martinez. Cabrera nearly made the United States U18 national team despite being only 16 years old; Lavarine won the 2015 Ringside World Boxing Championship in the 114-pound 13-14-year old division on August 8 in Indepence, Mo.; and Martinez capped an excellent season of summer baseball on the mound as he was named the Texas Collegiate League Pitcher of the Year after starring for the Acadiana Cane Cutters.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
