Jesuit and Mt. Carmel Win Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournaments park
NEW ORLEANS (April 27, 2010) – Jesuit High School and Mount Carmel Academy were the boys and girls winners, respectively, at the 2010 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Wednesday and Thursday at the University of New Orleans. The region consists of teams from the Bayou region of Louisiana and the South-shore Metro New Orleans area.
Jesuit tallied 18 points to win the boys’ title, while Brother Martin (nine points) and Assumption (8 points) finished second and third, respectively. Teams receive one point for each match won. On the girls’ side, Mount Carmel registered 20 points, while Assumption and Dominican each collected 10 points.
Jesuit freshman Hobie Hotard won the boys’ singles championship with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over defending champion Brock Turnbull from Rummel. Jesuit advanced its top two doubles teams to the championship match, with Taylor Smith and Paul Mickan topping Theo Kennedy and Dylan Kennedy, 6-4, 6-1, for the title.
Mount Carmel’s Ellen Edwards won her second straight girls’ singles title, defeating Assumption’s Paige Blanchard, 6-3, 6-1m in the final. In doubles action, Mount Carmel sent its top two teams to the title match as well, with Meghan deBaroncelli and Gabriell Roe defeating Janie Lester and Annie Lavie, 6-0, 6-1. It was the second straight year that deBaroncelli and Roe earned the championship.
