Jesuit and Dominican Repeat as Class 5A Region III Tennis Champions
NEW ORLEANS (April 22, 2015) – The Jesuit High boys’ tennis team continued its string of dominance at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Tuesday and Wednesday at the City Park Tennis Center. The Blue Jays have won for boys’ bracket in all seven years that the Sugar Bowl has sponsored the event.
The girls’ bracket also featured familiar uniforms as Mount Carmel and Dominican battled it out for the title, with Dominican coming out on top for its third straight championship after sharing the 2012 title with Mount Carmel, which had won the three prior to that.
For the Jesuit boys, senior Gregory Suhor (pictured, from JesuitNola.org) won the singles championship after upending teammate Alex DePascual, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (retired). Suhor had stopped Benjamin Chanes of Brother Martin in the semifinals while DePascual defeated Sean Stewart from Terrebonne in his semifinal match. In doubles, twins Jonathan and Jacob Niehaus defeated Brandon Beck and Trey Hamlin, also from Jesuit, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
On the girls’ side, Mount Carmel freshman Taylor Garcia won the singles title while Dominican’s team of sophomore Morgan Forshag and freshman Lily LaBiche collected the doubles championship. Garcia defeated Dominican senior Haley Tucker, the two-time defending champion in the tourney, 6-4, 6-0, in the finals.
Each quarterfinalist in singles and doubles qualified for the LHSAA State Championships to be played next week in Monroe, La.
