Jesuit and Dominican Continue Class 5A Region III Tennis Dominance
NEW ORLEANS (April 19, 2017) – Jesuit High School earned its ninth straight boys’ championship in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Tuesday and Wednesday at the City Park Tennis Center. On the girls’ side, Dominican collected its fifth straight championship in the event.
The boys’ championship came down to a tiebreaker as Jesuit and Brother Martin tied with 16 overall points. The Blue Jays were awarded the regional team championship by virtue of the second tiebreaker I the LHSAA bylaws – the Blue Jays advanced four teams to semifinal action while Brother Martin had three.
The clincher for Jesuit was in doubles as Jack Steib and Trey Hamlin topped Brother Martin’s Ben Chanes and Zachary Brubaker. The Blue Jay tandem had defeated another Crusader duo, Corey Canzoneri and Christopher Russo, in the semifinals.
Brother Martin’s Ethan Bosch was the boys’ singles champion.
While Dominican held on to win the girls’ bracket, it was once again Mount Carmel making the biggest challenge – the Cubs settled for second place for the fifth straight year. Mount Carmel junior Taylor Garcia won her third straight regional title. She defeated Dominican’s Jillian Sandoz.
In girls’ doubles, Gabby Terranova and Morgan Forshag from Dominican earned the championship.
Each quarterfinalist in singles and doubles qualified for the LHSAA State Championships to be played next week in Monroe, La. Jesuit has won nine straight state boys’ tennis titles.
