Jabiari Tyler Named September Athlete of the Month park
Jabiari Tyler, the standout sophomore quarterback at Newman High School, has earned recognition as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month for September after balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
For the month of September, Tyler threw for an amazing 1,223 yards with 19 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. He completed 79.3% of his tosses. For good measure, he added 299 yards on the ground, averaging 7.6 yards per carry and six mores TDs. He also accomplished something that neither Peyton Manning nor Eli Manning did as Newman QBs – throwing for six touchdowns in a single game. In fact, he did it twice in the month, once against Miller-McCoy and then again against Carver. In the game against Carver, a wild 72-68 victory, the sophomore carried the team on his back with 430 passing yards and six TDs, as well as 92 yards rushing and three more scores to finish with an amazing nine touchdowns in one game.
Tyler beat out McMain receiver Michael Andrade and Southern University linebacker Anthony Balancier in this month's balloting.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
