Riverside Boys and Curtis Girls Capture Top Titles at Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic
NEW ORLEANS (January 6, 2018) – Riverside Academy captured its fourth boys’ title in six years at the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Basketball Classic on Saturday evening at the Alario Center. John Curtis Christian School earned the Girls’ Platinum title while Lafayette Christian won the Gold Bracket and Dominican took the Silver Bracket title.
In the boys’ championship game, Riverside improved to 22-0 on the season with a 61-55 overtime victory against Karr. Jared Butler, an Alabama signee, scored a game-high 26 points, including four three-pointers, while adding six steals, five rebounds and five assists. The 6-3 guard was named the tournament MVP.
Sophomore standout Jerkalia Jenkins scored 24 points to earn MVP honors as she led Curtis to a lop-sided 57-36 victory over Kentwood (Ill.) in the girls’ platinum division. The Patriots improved to 15-1 overall with the victory. It was its third trip to the championship game, but the first victory for Curtis.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 93 Hall of Fame players, 49 Hall of Fame coaches and 18 Heisman Trophy winners in its 84-year history. The 85th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, featuring top teams from the Big 12 and the SEC, will be played on January 1, 2019. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1.6 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors nearly 100,000 student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.5 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
