Haley Bonneval from Fountainebleau Volleyball Earns Athlete of the Month Honors park
Volleyball star Haley Bonneval from Fountainbleau High School has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for November. She was selected over eight other strong candidates in balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Bonneval led her 44-1 volleyball team to the Division 1 LHSAA state volleyball championship on Nov. 12 at the Ponchartrain Center in a four-set victory over Mount Carmel. She was named the Most Outstanding Player in the state championship game on her 18th birthday and is headed to Notre Dame on a full scholarship. She competed for the West team in the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association annual All-Star game on Nov. 19 at Newman and was named St Tammany Parish athlete of the week for the second time in mid-November. She also made honorable mention for the 2011-2012 AVCA Under Armour All American team. In four state tournament games, she tallied 82 kills, 57 digs, and 13 blocks, including 28 kills, 19 digs and four blocks in the championship match against Mt. Carmel.
Five other local student-athletes were just behind Bonneval in the balloting as she captured the honor over three high school football standouts (Jeffrey Hall from St. Charles Catholic, Cyril Grayson from Rummel and Matt Bergeron from Mandeville), a women's basketball star (Keiva Council from Loyola University) and a Heisman Trophy candidate (Tyrann Mathieu from LSU).
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
