Seventh-Grade Basketball Star Earns April Athlete of the Month Honor
NEW ORLEANS (May 1, 1985) – Stacey Flanagan, the seventh-grade star of the Jefferson Parish Recreation Department’s East biddy basketball team, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for April. She shares the honor with track star Zina Age from SUNO. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, sponsored by the Sugar Bowl. Flanagan is thought to be the youngest winner of the honor.
Flanagan, a student at St. Edward the Confessor in Metairie, led the JPRD East biddy basketball team to the international championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible.
