Sugar Bowl Open Regattas
November 14, 2020 - November 15, 2020
The Allstate Sugar Bowl will host three regatta events in the month of November. Regatta, or sailing, has been a part of the Sugar Bowl event repertoire since its inception in 1934. All events take place on Lake Pontchartrain with the Southern Yacht Club as the headquarters.
The Sugar Bowl Open Regatta will kick things off on November 14-15. Different classes of boats will compete each day. On November 21-22, the Sugar Bowl will host the Great Oaks High School Regatta. In normal years, the Bowl would also host the Sugar Bowl High School Regatta, but those events have been combined for 2020. The final event of the abbreviated regatta schedule will be the Optimist Midwinters Regatta on November 27-28 (Thanksgiving Weekend). Optimist sailors compete in three different age categories – under 10 years old, 11-12 years old and 13-15 years old. The Optimist Midwinters are expected to include over 100 sailors.
“The Sugar Bowl Regatta has always been one of the premier yachting events in the United States,” said Barton Jahncke, Olympic Gold Medal winner and multiple Sugar Bowl Trophy winner. “It has given young sailors, from the Optimist class through high school and intercollegiate levels, the opportunity to learn how to compete at a very high level. The Regatta is extremely well-organized and is held in high regard by national and international competitors alike.”
