Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic
March 24, 2012 @ 12:00 am
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic, held each spring (March 23-24 in 2012), is recognized as one of the top high school track and field classics in the Southeast region. Since 1993, this event has been the largest high school track and field invitational in Louisiana, featuring more than 100 boys and girls teams and nearly 2,000 student-athletes from Louisiana and surrounding states. The event is held in Tad Gormley Stadium, a recently-renovated facility which has hosted numerous track and field events, including the U.S. Olympic Trials.
"Since coming on board in 1996 as the sponsor, the Sugar Bowl has made it possible to transform what was once a modest local event into one of the premiere high school track & field meets in the country," said meet director Mike Corn. "The Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic has become a fixture on the schedule of many teams from throughout the South and continues to generate greater and greater interest nationwide. I think that the Sugar Bowl Committee recognized some time ago that high school sports are vital to our community and they have made a financial commitment to student athletes who take part in those sports, providing them with opportunities to compete in first class events that most probably would not have otherwise."
St. Paul’s Episcopal of Alabama and Pearl High School of Mississippi earned the 2011 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic titles on March 25-26 . St. Paul’s Episcopal claimed the girls’ team title with 101 points and Pearl High School’s 74 points earned the boys’ team title.
McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.) took home girls’ team runner-up honors with 53 points while John Curtis Christian’s 70 points landed them second in the boys’ events. The 4×400 meter relay was the deciding factor for the boys’ title as Pearl and John Curtis entered the final event tied.
The outstanding performer awards for the 2011 Classic went to four deserving Louisiana athletes.
John Curtis’ Dalton Duvio vaulted to a new meet record of 17’01", the number two mark in the nation at this stage of the season, earning him the boys’ Outstanding Field Performer award. South Plaquemines’ Bradley Sylve took the 100m (10.24) in meet record time and the 200m (21.25) to claim the boys’ Outstanding Track Performer award.

McDonogh 35 freshman Marcquita Stalbert was a triple sprint winner (100m, 200m, 400m), a first in the 18-year history of the event, earning her the girls’ Outstanding Track Performer award.
