Allstate Sugar Bowl Tennis
The fourth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Tennis Classic is scheduled for Saturday to Monday, November 9-11, 2019 at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center (5900 Marconi Dr.), considered to be the finest tennis facility in the state. Sugar Bowl junior tennis returned in 2016 after a hiatus of nearly two decades.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Tennis Classic will open play on Saturday at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday matches will be played at the City Park Tennis Center, UNO Tennis Center, Audubon Tennis Center and Xavier Tennis Center. The finals for all divisions will be played at the City Park Tennis Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. The event is free and open to the public.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Tennis Classic is a USTA National Tournament. It is a USTA National Qualifying Tournament for female and male players ages 12 to 18 years old that reside anywhere within the United States. The top 32 applicants in each age / gender division earn entry into the tournament. The tournament hosts both singles and doubles in every age division (Boys & Girls 12, 14, 16 and 18).
A total of 528 individuals representing 34 states are entered in the event. States represented are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin as well as Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
A top local product to watch at the event will be Gavriella Smith, last year’s 16-year old girls champion who moves up to the 18-year old division this year. A junior at Lusher High School, Smith will also compete in the 16-year old doubles competition. She is a four-time Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA state champion.
Another return defending champion is Dallas’ Alex Cairo who moves up to the 16-year old boys’ division after winning the 14-year old title last year.
The Sugar Bowl sponsored a junior tennis tournament from 1948-1993. It evolved into a collegiate and international tourney from 1994 to 2001.
