Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic, Jan. 30-31, 2010
The fourth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic will be held at Lafreniere Park on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 30 and 31. A regional event, the classic features teams at four boys’ levels: varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school. There is no charge for fans to attend the event.
The event opens with a free skills clinic on Friday, Jan. 29. Game action begins on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will continue to 5 p.m. Sunday’s action will also begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Championship tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. A full schedule will be available at www.AllstateSugarBowl.org the week before the event.
The event has grown at a pace which matches the sport throughout the country. In 2007, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic had eight teams; in 2008, that jumped to 17 squads; while last year’s event reached 27 teams. Recognized as one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States, lacrosse has seen youth participation grow over 500 percent since 1999 to nearly 250,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 200,000 high school players. The high-speed game is also a fan favorite, drawing crowds of as many as 50,000 for NCAA Final Four games.
High schools scheduled to have teams in action at this year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl event include New Orleans area squads from Archbishop Rummel High School, Brother Martin High School, Jesuit High School, Mandeville High School and St. Paul’s High School. Lafayette High School and St. Thomas More High from Lafayette will also be in action as well as Baton Rouge Catholic. A newcomer to the event is John Carroll Catholic High School from Birmingham, Ala.
All of those teams will be looking to knock off three-time defending champion Klein High School from Houston.
The free clinic is open to all middle school, junior high and high school players; it will also be held at Lefreniere Park. Tom Gill, the head coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, will lead a team of college coaches who will serve as clinic instructors. All players attending the clinic should bring their own equipment. There is no pre-registration necessary.
