Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic
January 30, 2011 @ 12:00 am
The fifth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic will be held Jan. 29-30, 2011, at Lafreniere Parkin Metairie. This is a regional event with teams competing at four boys’ levels: varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school.
The event has grown at a pace which matches the sport throughout the country. In 2007, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic had eight teams; in 2008, that jumped to 17 squads; while the 2009 event reached 27 teams; and 2010 featured over 30 teams. Recognized as one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States, lacrosse has seen youth participation grow over 500 percent since 1999 to nearly 250,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 200,000 high school players. The high-speed game is also a fan favorite, drawing crowds of as many as 50,000 for NCAA Final Four games.
High schools that had teams in action at the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl event included New Orleans area squads from Archbishop Rummel High School, Brother Martin High School, Jesuit High School, Mandeville High School and St. Paul’s High School. Lafayette High School and St. Thomas More High from Lafayette will also be in action as well as Baton Rouge Catholic. A newcomer to the event is John Carroll Catholic High School from Birmingham, Ala., while Klein returned and continued its dominance of the event.
