"We are very excited and privileged to team with the Sugar Bowl to host such a wonderful tournament," said Tulane head coach Sinisa Momic. "We are very grateful for the Sugar Bowl’s support and efforts to help us put on such a first-class event in New Orleans for most of the last decade and we are hopeful that this relationship can continue to blossom into something special. There is nothing better than to be able to open your home schedule with such a wonderful event and we couldn’t do it without them. Tulane and the Sugar Bowl Committee recognize how important our two entities are to this city and this tournament is just another example of our commitment to making New Orleans a truly unique sports town at the college level."
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic will be the first collegiate event of the organization’s year-long repertoire of events, which will be highlighted by a pair of the top college football games of the year in the Louisiana Superdome: the 78th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and the Allstate BCS National Championship game on Monday, Jan. 9. In addition, the bowl is part of the local organizing committee for the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four, another Superdome event scheduled for March 31 and April 2. Through hosting and sponsorships, the Allstate Sugar Bowl supports and honors over 13,000 student-athletes each year.
"We are pleased to again partner with Tulane to bring this outstanding college volleyball tournament to New Orleans," said Paul Hoolahan, Chief Executive Officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "The school does an excellent job with the event and has helped make this a point of pride among the 25 community-related sporting events the Bowl supports each year."
Tulane closed the 2010 season with wins in six of its last seven matches and hopes to carry that momentum into the 2011 campaign, which opens at the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Aug. 26. The young Green Wave will feature just one senior and three juniors on its roster.
San Diego State, which returns five starters from last year’s team, wrapped up the 2010 campaign with a 16-16 mark, including a victory in the season-opening Aztec Invitational. Southern Illinois posted a 14-14 record last season; the Saluki return four starters from a squad which won both the UConn Tournament and the Saluki Invitational. William & Mary posted an 11-15 mark in 2010 but returns sophomore Celine Alasomuka, an All-Rookie selection in the Colonial Athletic Association last year, as well as a highly-rated recruiting class.
The Sugar Bowl Committee continues to be very active in the New Orleans community by holding fast to its mission of sponsoring and promoting amateur sporting events which foster revenue and spark economic growth for the city and the state. This year the Bowl will support more than 25 events in sports such as volleyball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, sailing, track and field, soccer and tennis, as well as football. In addition, the Allstate Sugar Bowl sponsors the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame as well as the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.
