Destrehan's Kade Granier Earns April Athlete of the Month Honor park
Kade Granier from Destrehan High School, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for April. He is the first Destrehan baseball player to win the honor. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Granier was a perfect 5-0 during the month of April with four district wins and a no-hitter in a playoff victory against Byrd High School. In 29 innings, Granier allowed just one earned run (Hahnville) for an ERA of 0.24 with 30 strike outs. He also batted .320 with two homeruns and 10 RBI. His April performance followed up a March in which he went 4-0 with a 0.63 ERA over 33 innings to go with 34 K's. He hit .367 with three homeruns and 14 RBI in March. For the year, Granier was a perfect 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA, 76 strikeouts. The Wildcats finished 24-12.
Grainier earned the honor over four other baseball standouts and one track star. The track star was Andre Dorsey, a Chalmette High grad who set a school record in the long jump. Two collegiate baseball pitchers also up for the honor were Randy LeBlanc from Tulane and Daniel Posway from Loyola. LeBlanc had a 2.22 ERA over four strats while Posway was 2-1 with a 0.71 ERA for the Wolf Pack. Other high school nominees were Owen Magee (Brother Martin) and Tyree Thompson (Karr). Magee batted .487 with 16 RBI in 12 April games for the Crusaders while Thompson posted a sterling 0.00 ERA with six victories in April for the Cougars.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
