Destrehan's Cara Ursin Earns Amateur Athlete of the Month Honor for March park
Cara Ursin, a sophomore star for the Destrehan High School girls basketball team, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for March. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Ursin capped her sensational season by being named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Louisiana on March 12. She was also selected to the NOLA.com Large School All-Metro Team on March 28. Ursin led her team to the state semifinals this year before they fell to top-seeded Ponchatoula on March 5. The Gatorade honor also takes into account "academic excellence" as well as "exemplary character" and Ursin currently has a 4.0 GPA while being very active in the community. She averaged 26.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.9 steals, 4.6 assists and 3.4 blocks per game for the season.
The Destrehan star edged out three other exceptional athletes for the March honor. Jordan Andrews led the Riverside Academy boys' basketball team to the LHSAA Class 2A state title, averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists over four March playoff games; LSU's Elise Bradley, a Mandeville High graduate, won her first collegiate tournament and climbed to No. 24 in the nation's collegiate golf rankings; and Devyn Keith posted the top 3,200-meter time (9:12.04) for a Louisiana runner this year.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
