Hoover Collects Third Straight Sugar Bowl Track Title for Boys; Baton Rouge Takes 2002 Girls’ Title

2002 Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic Results

NEW ORLEANS (March 23, 2002) – The Hoover High School boys’ track team, from outside Birmingham, Ala., won its third straight Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic Championship, while Baton Rouge High collected the 2002 girls’ title. It is the first title in the meet for Baton Rouge. The Hoover girls tallied a second-place finish, while Houston (Tenn.) High was the boys’ runner-up.

The Outstanding Track Performer for Boys was Scott Fuqua, a standout distance runner from Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham. Fuqua set a meet record with a time of 8:59.50 in the 3,200-meter run. The Girls’ Outstanding Track Performer was Julia Cathcart from Starkville (Miss.) High School, who turned the distance double with meet records in both the 1,600-meter run (5:09.51) and the 3,200-meter run (11:03.15).

Eli Bergerin from McKay High School in Salem, Ore., was the Outstanding Field Performer for boys after placing second in the long jump (21-7) and the triple jump (44-0.5). Edra Finley from UMS-Wright (Mobile, Ala.) was the Girls’ Outstanding Field Performer after winning the long jump (17-05.75) and the triple jump (37-00.75) while also adding a first place in the 300-meter hurdles (46.54).
