Out-of-State Schools Take Both Sugar Bowl Track Titles for First Time in 2000

George County (Miss.) High School and its stable of talented sprinters ran away from the competition to capture the girls’ championship at the 2000 Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic. Meanwhile, Hoover High School from Alabama captured the boys’ championship to mark the first time in the eight-year history of the event that both team titles went to out-of-state schools.

The Mississippi girls tallied 86 points while winning three individual events and two relays. McMain High from New Orleans was second with 61 points. On the boys’ side, Hoover finished with 61 points with three individual wins and one relay title. L.W. Higgins from New Orleans was second with 54 points.

Starr Williams from Sarah T. Reed in New Orleans was the Outstanding Girls’ Field Performer after winning both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She also added the long jump title to her resumé. The Outstanding Girls’ Track Performer for the second year in a row was Christy Fairley from George County. Fairley set a meet record in the 400-meter dash and also won the 100-meter dash.

For the boys, Skyler Green earned Outstanding Track Performer recognition after registering a meet record in the 100-meter dash. The Boys’ Outstanding Field Performer was St. Martin’s Episcopal star Ryan Rossner, who won both the shot put and the discus.
