Harry Martinez – Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame
New Orleans States/New Orleans States-Item
Harry Martinez was a sportswriter who covered the southeastern and national sports scene for nearly 50 years in New Orleans. He served as the sports editor for the New Orleans States and later the States-Item.
From 1916 to 1946, he selected the “official” all-state football teams. Martinez’s all-state selections were considered one of the most prestigious honors a young football player could receive.
In 1969, he was presented Special Certificate of Merit and a gold key to the city of New Orleans by Mayor Victor Shiro in recognition of his contributions to the youth of the city in his more than 50 years covering sporting events.
Martinez was also selected to the Fairgrounds Race Course Press Box Hall of Fame.
