Arthur Burke – Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame

Arthur I. “Art” Burke, who served the New Orleans community as a sports journalist for 45 years, retired after a 12-year stint (1964-75) as the executive sports editor of the New Orleans States-Item. Burke began covering high schools as a student at Loyola and Tulane in 1930 and later covered boxing world championships, Kentucky Derbies, World Series, Super Bowls and All-Star games.

A member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, Burke was called to active duty in October 1940 and served in the Pacific in World War II until January 1946. When he returned home, he went back to the New Orleans States (the predecessor to the States-Item) to cover boxing.

An original member of the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, Burke served as the group’s chair in 1977. He was also heavily involved in American Legion Baseball and was a member of Legion Post No. 175, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6640.

A lifelong New Orleanian, he died of congestive heart failure on January 27, 1997 at the age of 82.
