Allstate Sugar Bowl Notes

  • This year’s game marked the 12th time that teams from the current membership of the Big 12 played teams from the current membership of the SEC in the Sugar Bowl. The Big 12 has won seven of those match-ups.
  • The 48 points scored by Ole Miss were the third most points scored in Sugar Bowl history, trailing only Florida, which scored 52 in the 1997 game and 51 in the 2010 contest.
  • Ole Miss’ 34 points scored in the first half tied the Sugar Bowl record for points in a half – the total matched LSU’s opening half against Illinois in the 2002 Sugar Bowl.
  • Ole Miss scored 24 points in the first 21:26 of the game; the last team to score that many points that quickly was West Virginia, which tallied 28 points in the first 15:50 of the 2006 Sugar Bowl.
  • The victory for Ole Miss was the first for the SEC in the Sugar Bowl since 2010 when Florida rolled over Cincinnati, 51-24.
  • The 28-point differential between Ole Miss (48) and Oklahoma State (20) was this seventh-highest margin of victory in Sugar Bowl history.
  • Teams leading at the half now have won 19 of the last 20 Sugar Bowls. Ohio State overcame a 21-20 halftime deficit in last year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl and the last time before that was when Virginia Tech trailed 10-7 before scoring 21 unanswered points to upend Texas, 28-10.
  • Chad Kelly’s fourth-quarter 14-yard pass to Laquon Treadwell gave him four touchdown passes in the game, tying the record for the most TDs passes in Sugar Bowl history. He matched the mark set by Florida State’s Chris Weinke in the 2000 Sugar Bowl and matched by Illinois’ Kurt Kittner (2002) and Oklahoma’s Trevor Knight (2014).
  • Additionally, Treadwell’s TD reception was his third of the game, also matching the Sugar Bowl record which was set by Florida’s Ike Hilliard in 1997.
  • Chad Kelly was named the 2016 Miller-Digby Award Winner as the Most Outstanding Player of the Sugar Bowl, becoming the sixth Ole Miss quarterback to collect the honor.
  • The attendance of 72,117 marked the 61st time in the Sugar Bowl’s 82-year history that it has featured over 70,000 fans.
  • The 650 combined passing yards by the two teams ranks fifth all-time in Sugar Bowl history, while the 49 combined completions is tied for fourth all-time and the 80 pass attempts is sixth all-time.
