Cara Ursin Earns Amateur Athlete of the Month Honor for January park
Destrehan basketball star Cara Ursin has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for January. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
In the month of January, Ursin led unbeaten Destrehan to an 11-0 record. During the month, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in Louisiana averaged 27.9 points, 13 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 4.9 steals and 3.9 blocks per game. The Baylor commit was also 12-of-20 from three-point range and 65-of-74 from the foul line. She led Destrehan to the Platinum bracket championship of the prestigious Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic, earning Most Valuable Player honors after a 27-point championship game performance against John Curtis. She also had an amazing 28-point, 28-rebound performance in a win over East St. John and a triple-double (26 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, as well as six steals and five blocks) against Terrebonne. Destrehan is currently 29-0 on the season.
Ursin had major competition for the January honor as three other basketball stars were also nominated. UNO Men's Basketball senior Erik Thomas averaged 18.6 points and 6.5 rebounds in seven games during the month of January, leading the surprising Privateers to a 5-2 mark. In addition, a brother-sister combo was also nominated. Kai Morgan, a 6-3 shooting guard, had a standout month of January, averaging 22.6 points, 5 assists and 4.8 rebounds per outing for the John Curtis Patriots. His older sister, Kolby, recorded seven consecutive 20-point outings during the month, to lift her average to 19.6 points per game (ranking her second in the AAC and 22nd nationally).
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
