Brent Bonvillain Collects August Athlete of the Month Honor park
The Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for August is Brent Bonvillain, who was a standout pitcher for the New Orleans Boosters. He was selected in balloting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Bonvillain, who had recently completed his career at Delgado Community College and is now pitching for LSU, was a key player in leading the New Orleans Boosters to the All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) national tournament in Johnstown, Pa. His Johnstown highlight was pitching six innings of a combined no-hitter in the Boosters' 12-0 win vs. Philadelphia. He also pitched in the championship game loss to Baltimore, finishing the tournament with 13.2 innings pitched, allowing a total of three hits with 15 strikeouts.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
