Allstate Sugar Bowl and National Football Foundation Honor 35 Scholar-Athletes
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame held its 2011 Awards Luncheon in the Napoleon Room of the New Orleans Hilton Riverside on Wednesday. The highlight of the event was $10,000 scholarships being distributed to four local high school scholar-athletes.
Archie Manning, a member of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee and the national chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, recognized 35 local high school football players for their achievements in the classroom and on the football field.
After the full 35 were introduced, Judge Lance Africk, the President of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, surprised the audience by announcing that the bowl had boosted its contributions from two $2,500 scholarships to the four $10,000 awards. Honorees submitted essays stating their case to earn the scholarships and after a committee review, the winners were Ryan Niedermair (Mandeville High School), Gavin Parria (Fisher High School), James Quellmalz (Archbishop Rummel High School) and Tyrone Williams (McDonogh 35 College Prep School).
The following are excerpts from Africk’s introductions of the scholarship winners:
“[Neidermair] has been active in a wide-range of activities in addition to football, while still maintaining a 4.2 grade-point average. He has worked very closely with students with disabilities and based on his essay, has developed true friendships while mentoring these students. The son of a career naval aviator, he is a true believer in the words ‘hard work’ and he will continue that effort at Rhodes College and then he plans to go on to medical school.
“[Parria] is a first-team all-district football player and the President of the National Honor Society with a 3.82 grade-point average. He is very active in his school and his community, but more impressively, he has assisted his family of commercial fishermen by working on a fishing boat every summer since he was nine years old. As we all know the fishing industry took quite a hit this past summer due to the oil spill, we hope this scholarship will help make up for a tough year in the gulf.
“[Quellmalz] overcame a broken leg suffered on a touchdown in his freshman year to help lead his school to an undefeated season and its first state championship appearance. A three-year football letter-winner and a two-year starter, he has achieved honor roll status in every quarter since elementary school, while volunteering for a wide-range of causes as a member of Operation Head-Start.
‘[Williams] wrote in his essay that he “has worked hard to defy the myth that athletes cannot do sports and be smart too” – something he has proven through his success on the field and in the classroom. Very focused on helping his family, he still managed to be a two-time academic all-state football player, maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average while participating in a wide-range of community service activities.”
In addition, two local businessmen were recognized for their contributions to the community and the sport of football.
Doug Hertz, a member of the Tulane Board of Administrators and the Chair of the Board’s Athletics Committee, was recognized as the Distinguished American Award. Using his multiple degrees from Tulane, Hertz has become a very successful businessman, serving as President and CEO of United Distributors. In addition, he has remained very active with his alma mater, spearheading several initiatives to enhance and improve intercollegiate athletics at Tulane. He led a charge to increase the department’s budget, which was recently approved, and is currently studying the possibility of an on-campus football stadium for the Green Wave. Rick Dickson, Tulane Director of Athletics, accepted on behalf of Hertz.
Bill Curl, the director of media relations for the Louisiana Superdome for 33 years, received the Contribution to Amateur Football Award. Curl, who worked as the sports information director at Tulane and Arkansas prior to his time at the Superdome, has been instrumental in the promotion and betterment of amateur football in the city and state. Curl was one of the driving forces in getting the LHSAA to move all of its state championship football games to the Superdome three decades ago, a model that is followed by high school associations in several other states. Curl was introduced by legendary high school football coach J.T. Curtis, from John Curtis Christian School.
