Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field![]() The Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic, held each spring, is recognized as one of the top high school track and field classics in the Southeast region. Since 1993, this event has been the largest high school track and field invitational in Louisiana, featuring more than 100 boys and girls teams and nearly 2,000 student-athletes from Louisiana and surrounding states. The event is held in Tad Gormley Stadium, a recently-renovated facility which has hosted numerous track and field events, including the U.S. Olympic Trials. The 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic saw multiple meet records established along with numerous crowd-rousing performances which rank on a national level. On Friday afternoon, North Carolina-bound Merritt Van Meter established a new pole vault record by clearing 13 feet. She missed on her first two efforts at 12-6 for the record, but then topped that mark for the record before improving it to 13. She earned Most Outstanding Field Performer honors among girls. The Most Outstanding Track Performer was Florida-bound Cory McGee from Pass Christian. One of the top milers in the nation, McGee opted to run the 800 in New Orleans. She quickly jumped out in front at the start and dazzled all with her speed as she shattered the previous meet record of 2:14.58 with a time of 2:10.04 - the top time in the nation this year. On the boys side, Joshua Sigler, from Murphy High School in Mobile, earned Most Outstanding Field Performer honors after winning the long jump (22-10.75) and the triple jump (45-06). Most Outstanding Track Performer Recognition went to Stew Shoemaker from Bayside Academy, also in Alabama, who won the 800-meter run (1:58.93) and the 1,600-meter run (4:32.87). Another top performance was turned in by Toshika Sylvester from Phoenix High, who was the only triple-winner of the meet, capturing the girls' 100-meter dash (12.07), the 200-meter dash (24.87) and the long jump (17-07). Maudrecus Humphrey from Hoover High School in Alabama, won the boys' 100-meter dash (10.81) and the 200-meter dash (21.94); and Hilary Woods from Xavier Prep, topped the girls 400-meter dash field with a time of 56.38, while also helping her school to first in the 4x200 relay and second in the 4x400 relay. Katherine White, from St. Paul's High School in Mobile, set a meet record in the high jump with a mark of 5-8.25. Hoover scored 85.5 points to win the boys team championship with St. Augustine finishing second with 72 points. On the girls side, St. Paul's Episcopal of Mobile, tallied 90.5 points for a wide-margin of victory over Hoover (72 points) and Xavier Prep (54). Carmel, Newman, Northshore, Sacred Heart, St. Augustine, St. Mary's, Ursuline, West Jefferson and Xavier Prep. Sugar Bowl Track Stars Continue to Excel
Many of the standouts from the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic in March continued to have outstanding years on the track and the field. Standout Mississippi runner Cory McGee (pictured above), from Pass Christian High School, who shattered the Sugar Bowl meet record in the 800-meter run, capped her high school career by setting Mississippi records in the 1,600 and the 800 at the Class 4A state meet. She already owned the state mark in the 3,200-meter run. McGee will run for Florida this fall. Merritt Van Meter, from Country Day High School, was selected as the Metro Field Performer of the Year by the Times-Picayune. Van Meter, who set the meet record in the pole vault, went on to post the top pole vault in the nation this year while winning the Class 1A state title - she also placed second in the long jump and the 200-meter dash. She is headed to the University of North Carolina in the fall. Phoenix High School's Toshika Sylvester, who won the 100, 200 and long jump at the Sugar Bowl meet, earned Metro Track Performer of the Year honors after winning her third straight state 100-meter title and her second consecutive long jump title. She registered the top marks in the New Orleans area in the 100, the 200 and the long jump. Sylvester will compete for LSU in the fall. Don McGhee of Xavier Prep was the Metro Girls Coach of the Year - he led his squad to a third-place finish in the Sugar Bowl competition. Another out-of-state competitor, Stew Shoemaker from Bayside Academy in Alabama, also excelled after being named the Boys Outstanding Track performer at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic. Shoemaker won the 800 meters and the 1600 meters, while finishing second in the 400 meters at the Alabama 1A-3A state meet. |
