Retif was an all-city and all-state baseball player at Jesuit High School and captained the Blue Jays to a championship in 1950. As a three-year letterman on the Tulane baseball team, he played shortstop and tallied a career batting average of over .300. He went on to coach the Green Wave team from 1966-74, compiling a 123-74 record. His 1972 team won 23 of 29 games and notched a No. 7 national rating. Retif, who was also the founder of the Green Wave Dugout Club, was inducted in the Tulane Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He received the Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award from the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in June of 2013.
