Randy Bush played only one year, 1979, at UNO, but established a school single-season record with eight triples and was an All-Sun Belt selection. He also batted .369 that season and led the team with 18 home runs, 77 RBI, 155 total bases and a .764 slugging percentage. The Privateers went 49-14 that season – the second-highest winning percentage in school history – won the Sun Belt championship and qualified for the NCAA playoffs.

Bush played 12 years with the Minnesota Twins, hitting .251 with 96 home runs and 409 RBI and was part of World Series Championship teams in 1987 and 1991. During his time with the Twins, he tied an American League record by hitting pinch-hit home runs in consecutive at-bats in 1986.

Returning to the Lakefront, Bush spent five years as head coach from 2000 through 2004, compiling a 144-145 record. During his tenure, Bush led UNO to a Sun Belt Conference title in 2000 and an appearance in the NCAA South II Regional in Baton Rouge.
