Wayne Cooper played for the Privateers from 1974-78, first under Ron Greene and then under Butch Van Breda Kolff. In his senior season, he was chosen as Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year after averaging 18.1 points and leading the Privateers to the conference title and a 21-6 record. During his time at UNO, he led the Privateers to 80 victories.

Cooper still holds a place in UNO history. He is the career leader in rebounds with 923 while ranking 13th in scoring with 1,209 points.

Following his UNO career, Cooper went on to a 20-year career in the NBA with stops at Golden State, Utah, Dallas, Portland and Denver. He played in 984 career games and score 7,777 points. During the 1985-86 season, he recorded his top statistical season, averaging 13.1 points per game.
