A junior, Klein captured his third straight individual state championship, downing top-seed George Benoit of Holy Cross 3-1 at 132 pounds at the Pontchartrain Center on February 22. Klein helped lead Brother Martin to its third consecutive team state championship in Division I as the Crusaders scored 312.5 points to Jesuit's 277. The state title was the 15th in school history for the Crusaders outstanding wrestling program.
The competition was tight for Klein, even from his own teammates. Fellow Brother Martin wrestler Austin Meyn was also a state champ (at 138 pounds). Other candidates included Loyola women's basketball standout Jasmine Brewer, Grace King boys' soccer goalkeeper Jeremy Brown, Kennesaw State star jumper Andre Dorsey, UL-Lafayette men's basketball star Elfrid Payton and Ben Franklin girls' soccer star Alexandra Thomas.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
