UCLA Captures Title at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

UCLA, the second-ranked team in the nation, set a tournament record with an overall score of 843 to win the title at the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. In the individual race, Auburn's Marta Sanz (pictured with Sugar Bowl President Dennis Waldron and Sugar Bowl Committee member Dave Wolford) set the tournament 54-hole total individual record with an 8-under 208 to capture 2014 individual medalist honors after starting the day in third place. Denver's Tonje Daffinrud finished second with a 7-under 209.

UCLA, which finished second last year to USC, edged their California counterpart this year by six strokes. The top-ranked Trojans, who also won the title in 2011, had a streak of eight straight tournament victories snapped. Florida took third place while Denver was fourth. Clemson and Alabama tied for fifth place. Tulane, the host of the event, finished in 10th place.

"We putted quite well the last two rounds, starting out yesterday afternoon making some putts," UCLA head coach Carrie Forsyth. "Our team usually hits it pretty well and we hit it pretty close. The thing is whether or not we can make our putts. We were able to do that the last two days and that was a big part of it today."

Sanz, the individual titlist, was very complimentary of the event.

"I think it's (the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship) one of the greatest tournaments before the postseason. The great teams from the West come and all the ACC teams are here. They do a great job of hosting it and I'm really proud to win with so many really good players here."

"This tournament is just a fantastic event with the support of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. To have a tournament like this at English Turn with the support of the golf club and the membership here, it's really a special opportunity. It's something that most teams don't get the chance to do, and it's something that we looked forward to this year and we'll look forward to for years to come," Tulane had coach Lorne Don said.
