Darrel Williams, a 2014 commitment to Arizona State, ran for 741 yards and scored 11 times during the month of October, averaging an impressive 148.2 yards per game. The senior led the Metro area in rushing through October with 1,677 yards and 22 touchdowns. The John Ehret Patriots were 4-1 in October and, after being winless last season, they won the district championship this year.
Also nominated for the monthly honor were Cairo Santos (Tulane Football), Luke Kelly (De La Salle Football), Catherine Fakler (Xavier University Women's Cross Country) and Annie Hills (Loyola University Women's Cross Country). Santos, a star kicker, helped Tulane to a perfect 3-0 October, booting a pair of game-winning field goals during the month. Kelly had a huge game in an upset of McMain, tallying two interceptions, four tackles and a fumble recovery. Fakler and Hills were both standouts in NAIA cross country action. Fakler won the individual title at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship, shattering her own school record with a time of 18:41.03 in the five-kilometer race while Hills established a 5K school record as well, running a 19:14 race at the Sand Shark Invitational in South Carolina.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
