Dupre showed his versatility by helping the John Curtis football team to the state championship, catching four passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in two games - he left the state title game in the second quarter due to injury. After his gridiron success, the junior moved to the hardwood, averaging 16.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and eight blocked shots per game for the Patriots. He registered 24 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Country Day and captured the MVP of the Country Day Tournament by scoring 19 points with 12 boards and three blocks in the Championship Game against St. Thomas More.
Preston led East Jefferson to a perfect 10-0 month of January. The 6-4 junior averaged 19 points and seven rebounds per game during the month, leading the Warriors in scoring nine times. His highlight was a 25-point, 13-rebound effort against St. Augustine. He also tallied 18 points, six assists and four steals in a second meeting with the Purple Knights. For the season, East Jeff has a 29-2 record.
Finishing a close second in January balloting was Alex Thomas, a freshman star for the Ben Franklin girls soccer team. Thomas scored 22 goals with nine assists as the Falcons went 11-0 during the month. Ben Franklin plays for a perfect season and the Division II Girls State Championship on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against Vandebilt Catholic.
Also nominated for both months was Tulane basketball standout Josh Davis. The 6-8 junior forward is nearly averaging a double-double this year with 16.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He had six double-doubles in December and January while leading the Green Wave to a 9-5 record.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
