Sheldon and Riverside to Meet in Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Basketball Title Game

Riverside Academy, from Reserve, La., and Sheldon (Calif.) High School will play for the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Basketball Classic Boys Championship on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Alario Center in Westwego, La. The girls championship game at 6 p.m. will feature Salmen High School, of Slidell, La., against New Orleans' Warren Easton High.
Riverside beat Bishop Verot, from Fort Myers, Fla., in Friday's semifinal, 54-41. Von Julien led Riverside with 13 points, while Jordan Andrews added 12 and Herb McGee scored 10 for the Rebels. Riverside took control of the game in the first quarter as it outscored the Vikings, 22-9.
In the other semifinal, Sheldon beat defending state champion John Curtis, from River Ridge, La., 73-52. Sheldon made eight of 16 three pointers and outrebounded Curtis, 51-32. Antonio Lewis pulled down a tournament record 20 rebounds while Sheldon had four players in double figures led by Dakarai Allen's 21 points.
In the girls' semifinals, Warren Easton beat John Curtis 58-41, and Salmen defeated Hahnville, 49-16.
In Thursday action, the highlight was Riverside's Cory Costanza knocking down a three-pointer from the right corner as time expired to lift the Rebels into the semifinals with a 48-45 win over St. Augustine High.
Bishop Verot beat defending champion Douglass, from Oklahoma City, 75-67 in the late game to advance to the semifinals. The Vikings were led by a 35-point performance from Mason Taylor.
In another quarterfinal, Sheldon topped Northside, 65-53, as University of Washington commitment Darin Johnson scored 24 points in 29 minutes to lead the Huskies.
Curtis beat O.P. Walker, 59-49, to advance behind point guard Richard Durant's 18 points.
In girls play, Curtis beat Cabrini 62-31. The Patriots were paced by Kolby Morgan with 27 points. Warren Easton beat Mount Carmel 44-26. Hahnville beat Riverside 56-55, while Salmen defeated Albany 64-34.
