St. Aug and Holy Cross to Meet in Finals of Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tourney
Saturday, December 3, 2011
Host Holy Cross and defending champion St. Augustine will meet in the finals of the 2011 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Purple Knights topped East St. John, 58-48, in one semifinal, while the Tigers needed overtime to hold off Newman, 58-57. This year marks the 58th year of the tournament.
Holy Cross had to come from behind to advance as the Tigers trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter before scrambling to force overtime. Greg White-Pittman, who led the Tigers with 15 points, knocked down a key three-pointer late, while Joel Pichon's steal and layup knotted the game to force overtime. In the overtime session, the Tigers took the lead late and Jordan Brooker's steal in the final seconds preserved the victory. Newman was led by Duke Douglas' 22 points and 13 rebounds.
In the early semifinal game, St. Aug held a two-point lead after three quarters and then Sydie London scored all 10 points in a 10-1 Purple Knight rally to put the game away. London finished with 19 points while Craig Victor tallied 18 points and six blocks. East St. John was led by Elex Carter, who collected 10 points and 12 boards.
Saturday's action features consolation round action in the morning at De La Salle and Holy Cross, followed by the 7:30 p.m. title game at Holy Cross.
