LSU posted a perfect 4-0 mark in the month of September, climbing to No. 1 in the national rankings. Mathieu finished the month with 30 tackles as well as an interception, two forced fumbles and three tackles for loss.
In the season-opener against preseason No. 3 Oregon, Mathieu led the Tigers with 10 tackles and a pair of pass break-ups, while also forcing and recovering a fumble which he returned for a touchdown. He followed that with another 10 takedowns in a crucial SEC West road victory over Mississippi State. In the final game of the month, against Big East preseason favorite West Virginia, the St. Augustine High School product forced and recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the Tiger victory. Mathieu was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week after his West Virginia performance.
Mathieu and the top-ranked Tigers take on Tennessee this weekend in Knoxville; it will mark the third straight week that LSU has played a game as the No. 1 team in the nation, the first time that's happened since the 1959 season.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
