Super Bowl XLV To Include 12 Players From Sugar Bowl History

Friday, February 4, 2011

Super Bowl XLV, a matchup of the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers, will include a total of 12 players, six from each team, who competed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl during their collegiate careers.

In 1999, defensive end Ryan Pickett, now with the Packers, and Ohio State defeated Texas A&M 24-14 in the 65th Classic giving the Buckeyes their first Sugar Bowl victory. In 2001, Steelers' offensive tackle Max Starks and the Florida Gators were defeated by in-state rival Miami, 37-20.

The LSU Tigers will have former Sugar Bowl participants on the both sides of the field as Steelers safety Ryan Clark was a part of the Tiger squad that beat Illinois, 47-34, in 2002.  Packers' backup quarterback Matt Flynn is the only player out of the twelve to have played in multiple Sugar Bowls.  Flynn was a part of the squad that defeated Oklahoma, 21-14, for the 2004 National Championship.  Then, in 2007, Flynn was the backup quarterback in the first Sugar Bowl back in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the Tigers defeated Notre Dame 41-14.  He finished out his career as the starting quarterback for LSU in the 2008 Allstate BCS National Championship hosted by the Sugar Bowl with a win over Ohio State, 38-24.  Flynn was named offensive MVP.  Packers' fullback Quinn Johnson was a teammate of Flynn's at LSU for the 2007 Allstate Sugar Bowl and the 2008 Allstate BCS National Championship game in New Orleans.

In 2003, Steelers' cornerback Bryant McFadden played for the Florida State Seminoles and lost to Georgia, 26-13, in the 69th Sugar Bowl Classic.  Two years later in 2005, linebacker Chris Ellis, who is a member of the Steelers practice squad, competed with Virginia Tech against Packers' cornerback Pat Lee and the Auburn Tigers. Auburn completed a perfect season winning the matchup, 16-14.

Packers' defensive end Jarius Wynn competed in the 2008 Sugar Bowl with the Georgia Bulldogs as they defeated Hawai‘i by a score of 41-10. The following year, Steelers' linebacker Stevenson Sylvester helped bring undefeated Utah to its first Sugar Bowl as the Utes competed in the 75th anniversary of the Sugar Bowl Classic, upsetting fourth-ranked Alabama, 31-17.

In 2010, Steelers' center Maurkice Pouncey and Packers' practice squad linebacker Curtis Young met in the 76th Sugar Bowl playing for Florida and Cincinnati, respectively.  The Gators won that match-up, 51-24.

On Sunday, make sure to look out for these twelve individuals who are a part of Sugar Bowl history.
